About The World Football League

The World Football League is a draft league that was originally organized for the amusement, frustration and torment of a group of Playmaker Football aficionados on America Online.

That was 10 seasons ago, an eternity when you're talking about a bunch of (largely) adult males playing a football game that exists only in the computer -- and, of course, on the Internet. Three seasons ago we expanded our presence from our beginnings on America Online and moved onto the Internet. And now with the release of Playmaker Football for Windows, we're even taking PC coaches.

No. We haven't lowered our standards. Despite their choice of computer platform, some of the PC guys (many of them former Mac users who were forced to the dark side by workplace needs, lower prices, or just plain short-term mental disability) are fine coaches. At least that's what we tell them while we're kicking them up and down the field.

The main idea of a draft league is that you don't create a team of your choosing from scratch. You are, in essence, both coach and general manager. You have a roster of up to 55 players with given abilities. From that you create the 30-man Playmaker Football team file that is used in a season.

Your success in the games depends on your basic ability to coach (a combination of play design and use of artificial intelligence), maximize your team's strengths and take the best advantage of your opponent's weaknesses. This of course also implies an ability to evaluate talent and draft and trade accordingly as general manager of the franchise.

In between seasons in the WFL, some players improve in ability, some decrease in ability and some retire. You also draft new players from a rookie pool (or trade picks for veteran players). Thus over the course of one or more seasons you have the chance to mold the team into one that best fits your style and coaching philosophy.

The league will use PlayMaker version 2.3 for WFL10 (available for download for both the Macintosh and PC platforms at the Playmaker web site).

If you have an interest in the WFL, feel free to contact me. Participation is by invitation only, but once you have been screened and invited, it is first-come, first-served for any available franchises.

Commissioner, WFL8-10
